Amid Growing Job Losses In The Country, White House Considering More Aids To States

On Sunday, while expecting more job losses in the United States in the coming months, officials said that the White House is discussing with Republicans and Democrats in Congress about what should be included in another round of coronavirus relief legislation.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, and other officials in President Donald Trump’s administration said that they were talking to lawmakers on providing potential aid to states that have been severely hit by the pandemic.

Kevin Hassett, another White House economic adviser, said the coming legislation might include food aid to help Americans fighting hunger amid widespread job losses that have interrupted the income of many people. The legislation could also include broadband access for those who lack it, Kevin added.

While Democrats, who are in charge of the House of Representatives, are planning to disclose the new legislation as early as this week, the White House hinted it is in no rush to sanction another relief bill.

On Sunday, Mnuchin said on Fox News, “let’s take the next few weeks.”

Since early March, Congress has sanctioned $3 trillion to fight the pandemic, including taxpayer money for people and companies to lower the economic impact that includes an unemployment rate up to 14.7% in April, the biggest unseen since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Mnuchin said, “we want that before we jump back in and spend another few trillion of taxpayers’ money that we do it carefully. We’ve been very clear that we’re not going to do things to bail out states that were poorly managed.”

With the economy continues to worsen, pressure for further action may mount on the government.
