White House Staffers Will Now Wear Masks And Avoid Coming Into The Premises

The Trump White House has asked officials working in the West Wing are  to wear masks in order to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, according to a memo distributed to staffers on Monday.

Not only are officials in the building they are also being asked to wear face coverings when they’re not at their desks or able to maintain social distancing from others, a White House official confirmed to The press.

The memo, also urges staffers to “avoid unnecessary visits” to the White House.

“We continue to encourage all [executive office of the president] staff to use a facial covering whenever social distancing is not possible,” the memo states.

This change in protocol comes after two White House staffers tested positive for the coronavirus. One of President Trump‘s personal valets, and Vice President Pence’s press secretary, Katie Miller.

The CDC issued guidance last month encouraging all Americans to wear masks if and when social distancing was not possible, saying that it can cut down on the risk of those carrying the virus transmitting it to others.

The White House has put in place a number of measures in recent days to try to safeguard officials from the virus, which health experts warn is highly contagious. The entirety of the building is being deep-cleaned more often, and Trump, Pence, and other officials who meet them regularly are being tested daily for the virus rather than weekly.

Still, the addition of masks is worthy of note especially keeping in mind the reluctance of the President and his top aides to wear them on camera.

Previously the President scoffed at the idea, stating in April that he disliked the idea of wearing one while meeting with world leaders. He refused to one on camera during a visit to an Arizona mask production facility, though he did later claimed he wore one while off-camera.
