Trump Happy With Return of Live Golf Without Fans

On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump appreciated the return of live golf, referring to the televised broadcast of a two-on-two charity match between top players on the PGA Tour. It was the first event of a live sports match since the coronavirus lockdown.

Northern Ireland’s world No. 1 Rory McIlroy teamed up with United States’ Dustin Johnson against American duo Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff for the highly anticipated event. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, this was the first live pro sports competition taking place.

Trump said on the NBC Sports broadcast, “It’s a wonderful thing to see. I’m getting a little tired of watching 10-year-old golf tournaments where you know who won.”

The match took place in accordance with the social-distancing guidelines. Players at the Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida, stood 6 feet (1.8 m) apart and were carrying personal clubs and no caddies were allowed. The match continued on an empty course without the usual masses of golf fans.

Trump, being an avid golfer, has played rounds with current and former golf legends, including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and four-time major champion McIlroy, who had criticized Trump’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak last week.

During the event, Trump said, “we want to get sports back, we miss sports, we need sports in terms of the psyche, the psyche of our country, and that’s what we’re going.”
