Joe Biden Voiced His Support For The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team

On Saturday, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden spoke in support of the U.S. women’s soccer team, which recently suffered a setback in its gender discrimination lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation.

Last Friday, the court dismissed the women’s team’s claims for equal pay and handed over the victory to U.S. Soccer.

Biden wrote a tweet to the team saying, “Don’t give up this fight. This is not over yet.”

To the federation, he wrote, “Equal pay, now. Or else when I’m president, you can go elsewhere for World Cup funding.”

The former vice president is looking to take over the current Republican President Donald Trump in November’s U.S. presidential election.

It’s been a very public and bitter battle between the World Cup-winning team and U.S. Soccer. The players had been seeking $66 million in damages under the Equal Pay Act.

However, on Friday, Judge R. Gary Klausner of the United States District Court for the Central District of California dismissed the women’s team’s claims that they were getting less paid as compared to the men’s national team.

The complaints of unfair medical, travel, and training were accepted by the court and are set to proceed to trial from June 16.

In its summary judgment, the court said, “The WNT (Women’s National Team) has been paid more on both a cumulative and an average per-game basis than the MNT (Men’s National Team) over the class period.”

U.S. Soccer said that it wanted to work with the team to “chart a positive path forward to grow the game both here at home and around the world.”

On the other hand, the players said they are planning to appeal the court’s decision.

On Saturday, Billie Jean King, who fought for equal pay in tennis, also encouraged the team. She wrote in her tweet, “This is a setback, but it is not the end of the fight.”
