No key is required during public beta. Cache responses, preserve source and coverage fields, and never represent the ballot-preview endpoint as an official complete ballot.
Address-bearing endpoints return Cache-Control: private, no-store. Static public-record endpoints are cacheable and all API responses allow cross-origin GET requests.
Credit the data. Keep the evidence.
Every successful public-data JSON response includes suggested citation metadata. The chart endpoint keeps its original chart and metadata fields; OpenAPI, CSV, calendar files, and errors keep their own formats.
record_url is the canonical public page when exactly one record link is available. Collections expose record_urls; use the page for the record you actually cite. If no record page is supplied, record_url is null and credit_url points to these API docs. Citation links never include private address queries.
updated_at is a stated dataset update, or null when unspecified. verified_at is the latest stated source check—not proof every record is current. generated_at only says when the response was created. Keep source dates, coverage, and limitations beside the claim.
